Can You Take Probiotics And Vitamin D Together?

Research into the effects that probiotic bacteria have on vitamin d levels in the blood has been released.

In this guide, I will share more information on Probiotics and Vitamin D.

What Is Vitamin D?

Vitamin D is both a hormone that the human body produces naturally and a nutrient that you can eat from various foods. It is fat-soluble and not water-soluble which means it can dissolve easily in fats & oils. According to studies, Vitamin D may help with the following.

  • Fight Disease
  • Assist With Weight Loss
  • Help with Anxiety & Depression

If you are deficient in Vitamin D, then you may experience fatigue, muscle pains, and stress fractures in your bones.

You are more at risk for Vitamin D deficiency if you live in polluted areas or spend time indoors. During winter when there is less sunshine you may also not get enough Vitamin D since Vitamin D is absorbed through the skin.

If you want to get more Vitamin D you should spend more time outside to get sunlight on your skin, eat foods like cod liver oil, trout, salmon, mushrooms and eat probiotic foods to help with vitamin d absorption.

According to Harvard, a study in the BMJ suggests that vitamin D can protect against colds and flu, so it's important to keep your Vitamin D levels topped up if you get sick often.

Probiotics Help Vitamin D Absorption

This 2013 study from McGill University in Canada, looked at the effects of the Lactobacillus Reuteri NCIMB 30242 probiotic strain on the Absorption of Vitamin D in the gut.

The study with 127 participants started by saying that low 25-hydroxyvitamin D (Vitamin D) is a risk for conditions like osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and more.

The motivation for the study was that for some people, cholesterol-lowering therapies may lead to a reduction in the ability to absorb Vitamin D.

The placebo study showed that the group who took L. Reuteri for 13-weeks showed no differences in absorption for vitamin A, E, or β-carotene but Vitamin D absorption was increased by 25%.

Can You Take Probiotics And Vitamin D Together?

You can absolutely take Vitamin D and probiotics together without any interactions. You should however always consult with your doctor first before taking any new supplements.

The previous study seems to suggest that taking a probiotic supplement with L. Reuteri bacteria may help you absorb Vitamin D more efficiently. You can take both Vitamin D and Probiotic capsules at the same time with a glass of water.

Closing Thoughts

Vitamin D is important for helping the body absorb calcium and phosphorus. Also, studies show that Vitamin D may help with a lot of serious health conditions and reduce inflammation in the body. If you have trouble absorbing Vitamin D, then try taking a probiotic supplement with Lactobacillus Reuteri.
